Principal's Message

Greetings El Segundo Middle School Families,

It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to the 2018-2019 School Year.  We look forward to continued partnerships with our families and community members as we provide a stellar educational program within the El Segundo community.  We have many things to celebrate this school year, including our selection as a 2018 National School to Watch and our selection as an Apple Distinguished School. As a school, we will continue to build upon our successes, and make relevant changes to provide the best educational opportunities for our students.

You will notice several changes as we start the school year, including a modified bell schedule with a separate 6th grade lunch as well as PE classes separated by grade level.  It is our belief that these changes will support our incoming students with a successful transition to middle school.  We are also excited to share that we are in the process of hiring a safety assistant to provide additional monitoring of the campus.

El Segundo Middle School will continue to focus on both the academic and personal/social domains.  Every student will be engaged through learning activities that incorporate 21st Century Skills, such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. These practices, paired with technology integration, will support our efforts to prepare students for high school and beyond.  In addition to our rigorous and effective instructional practices in the classroom, we are mindful of ensuring the safety and well being of the students we serve.  We will begin the year with our anti-bullying campaign and vaping education campaign, and also have several exciting programs lined up throughout the year to support teen well-being, all graciously sponsored by our PTSA.

My number one priority is always the students of ESMS.  If there is anything I can do, or if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.  My door is always open, so let me know if I can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Melissa J. Gooden, Ed.D.
