Greetings El Segundo Middle School Family,
It is with great pride and excitement that I introduce myself as your new principal. I am truly honored to be joining the El Segundo community, which has already given me such a warm welcome. Over the last several weeks, I have been spending time getting to know the staff, families, and community to ensure that I am prepared to lead the excellent educational programs and traditions for which El Segundo Middle School is known.
Professionally, I possess over 17 years of experience in the field of education. This includes teaching, coaching, and administration. My very first teaching assignment was at the middle school level, and I hold very close to my heart the energy and inquisitiveness of students at this age. I also hold a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California where my research focused on 21st century skills, STEM education, and project-based learning as a means to prepare all students with the skills necessary to be productive members of the ever changing world.
I look forward to building meaningful relationships with all students, parents, and faculty. I am a firm believer in collaborating with all stakeholders to guarantee the best possible outcomes for the students we serve. My passion is, and has always been, educating students. With that in mind, you can expect that I will be visiting classrooms, examining data, and working closely with all of our staff to maintain a rigorous academic program for all learners. I look forward to collaborating with faculty and staff implementing the new schedule and Design class. Additionally, I will be getting to know our students, hearing why they love being students at El Segundo Middle School, and encouraging them to ask questions and take risks in their learning. Lastly, I am eager to meet parents and hear from all of you about how we are doing in meeting students’ needs.
My door is always open, so please stop by and say hello.
Melissa J. Gooden, Ed.D.
