The California Standards provide clear and consistent expectations for student learning, focusing on depth and rigor. El Segundo Middle School teachers have implemented the Core Standards in Language Arts and Math, and schoolwide, teachers have embraced practices and strategies that reinforce college and career readiness.

In 2012-2013, our Language and Literature teachers engaged in Professional Learning Communities with the guidance and expertise of the Talking Teaching Network. Outcomes included deeper understanding of the standards, implementation of new strategies and practices, and a document helping teachers align the Common Core with Middle Years Programme objectives (see attached document).

Schoolwide professional development aims to develop literacy across all subject areas to develop college and career readiness, as well as empower students to make positive changes in the world.

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is one standardized measure providing schools data on achievement toward California standards.
